August - Jobs for this month.....

General

Make sure that you water in the cool of the morning or evening.

Install guttering and a water butt on your shed, greenhouse or polytunnel. Harvesting FREE rainwater is now essential for DAGA members.

Look out for aphids, cabbage white butterfly caterpillars, pea moths and flea beetle.

Watch out both tomato / potato blight and blossom end rot on tomatoes / aubergines (irregular watering)

Vegetables

Sow the seeds of the overwintering crops of kales, spring cabbage, radicchio, chicory, spinach  and beet.

Make the last of any outdoor sowings to provide a late harvest for this season, radishes, lettuce and other salad leaf.

Harvest carrots, runner beans, beetroot, globe artichokes, cucumbers, courgettes, and second early potatoes

Pinch the tops of climbing beans to encourage bushier growth below.

Fruit

Cut back summer fruiting raspberries

Plum, apricot, cherry and peach trees should be pruned now (avoids the risk of silver-leaf disease if left later)

Prune trained apples and pears.

Pick plums, early pears and apples.
