General

Carry on weeding and hoe between crops on dry days to break up the soil.

Install guttering and a water butt on your shed, greenhouse or polytunnel. Harvesting FREE rainwater is now essential for DAGA members.

Look out for aphids, carrot fly and cabbage root fly.

 

Vegetables

Train in climbing beans and put supports in for peas. 

Dwarf and climbing French beans, runner beans, sweet corn, outdoor cucumbers, courgettes, pumpkins, squashes and outdoor cucumbers can now be planted into their final positions.

Continue making direct regular sowings in the soil of lettuce, radish, spinach, turnips, kohl rabi  and beetroot.

Lift early potatoes at the end of this month and earth up others.

Stop cutting asparagus and give the plants a top dressing of fertiliser.

Fruit

Protect any early strawberries with netting to keep birds and squirrels out.

Remove unwanted raspberry suckers.

Tie in blackberries and hybrid berries.

Thin out apples, pears, plums, damsons and gages.

Herbs

Chop back herbs such mint, chives, sage and thyme to stimulate the growth of fresh leaves.
