November - Jobs for this month.....

 

General

Dig, dig, dig ....... before the ground freezes

Collect leaves and store in a cage to make leafmould

Dig in manure and compost

Place your discounted seed and potato order for next year through the DAGA Seed scheme

Vegetables

Plant garlic and overwintering onion sets

Sow broad beans (early overwintering varieties) and hardy peas

Cover any late crops with cloches

Cover winter brassicas with netting

Start picking Brussels sprouts from the bottom upwards removing any yellow leaves as you go

Lift, divide and replant chives

Fruit

Plant rhubarb sets or split existing ones

Plant new, bare-rooted canes of raspberries, blackberries, hybrid berries and vines 

November is the optimum time to plant cherry and plum trees (Nov - Jan) and apple and pear trees (Nov - Mar)

Prune gooseberries and currants

Start winter pruning apples and pears (once most of the leaves have fallen)

Apply grease bands to fruit trees

Mulch around the base of fruit trees and bushes
